Colleagues:
Here's a great job opportunity for a top scholar who is a hot-shot
associate professor, an underpaid full, or just has a hankering to live
in central Illinois. A pretty broad range of substantive interests would
be appropriate. Key specifications: a pretty good salary, 1-1 teaching
load, sizable pot of research funds, and an interest in a bit of public
outreach of some sort (to be defined by the person taking the job). All
that and the beautiful city of Springfield, IL. Let me know if you have
any questions, interest, or nominations. Thanks a lot. (sorry about the
cross-listings...)

Position search: Wepner Distinguished Professorship in Political Science
at the University of Illinois at Springfield

The Political Science Program at the University of Illinois at
Springfield (UIS) seeks to fill the Wepner Distinguished Professorship
in Political Science. UIS takes full advantage of its location in the
hometown of Abraham Lincoln and one of the nation's most vibrant state
capitals. As such, the Wepner Distinguished Professorship will be a
scholar of international repute in one or more substantive areas
relating to the legacy in American politics of the 16th president, such
as:
*	the politics of race and class,
*	constitutional law and civil liberties,
*	presidential and legislative politics,
*	political parties, and
*	American political thought and development.
The successful candidate will be a political scientist with an
international reputation for superior scholarship and teaching in one or
more of these areas, in proportion to his/her tenure in the discipline.
Highly successful associate professors will be considered for this
position. The Wepner Distinguished Professor will continue to engage in
world-class research, teaching, and public affairs activities related to
his or her interests in these fields that represent the legacy of
Abraham Lincoln. In addition, he/she will teach one course per semester
in the Political Science Department in his/her area of specialty.

In addition to a competitive salary, the appointment includes a
substantial endowment of funds to support the Wepner Distinguished
Professor's research and public affairs activities. Minimum
qualifications are an earned Ph.D. in Political Science, faculty rank at
the associate professor or full professor level, and a strong record of
scholarly achievement. Preference will be given to candidates who also
have a record of relevant public affairs activities, a demonstrated
ability to communicate scholarship to a broad audience, and a record of
teaching experience and scholarship in the areas that highlight the
contributions of Abraham Lincoln. Applicants must have a record of
excellence in scholarship, teaching, and service sufficient to qualify
for tenure and the rank of full professor at UIS.

Located in the state capital, the University of Illinois at Springfield
is one of three campuses of the University of Illinois. The UIS campus
serves approximately 4,800 students in 20 graduate, 1 doctoral, and 21
undergraduate programs. The academic curriculum of the campus
emphasizes a strong liberal arts core, an array of professional
programs, extensive opportunities in experiential education, and a broad
engagement in public affairs issues. UIS has a strong record of
accomplishment in combining scholarship on Abraham Lincoln, his legacy,
and public affairs activities. The Naomi B. Lynn Distinguished Chair in
Lincoln Studies, located in the History Department, was established in
2001. The Center for State Policy and Leadership at UIS cosponsors the
Papers of Abraham Lincoln, an ongoing, nationally recognized project of
the Illinois State Historic Preservation Agency and the Abraham Lincoln
Presidential Library and Museum.
