No disagreement on any of the recommendations that have been made
already, especially for ones like JEDIT that run on multiple platforms.
But if it's OK for the editor to be Windows only, you should definitely
look at Notepad++ (http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm).
It's free and open-source; syntax highlighting files are available for
Stata and R (Tex is built-in); it has regex support for search/replace,
bookmarks, syntax folding, and more.
Of course, some folks won't like it 'cause it's not arcane enough.
